From Famagusta to Vienna – English Edition
In the 1920s, a young man from Famagusta sets off to study medicine in Vienna. Dazzled by the Central European way of life, the Jews, music and science, he also bears witness to the rise of fascism.
He returns to Cyprus in 1940. A beautiful Greek woman becomes his assistant at work, and he is charmed by her. He does not want to get attached, however, and he sends her off to Alexandria. There, Kate lives through the apogee of Alexandria during the reign of King Farouk.
“In Niki Marangou’s world,” writes critic Alexis Zeras, “Eastern listlessness coexists with sensuality and the brilliant intellectuality of Western tradition.”
